INEIGHT CASE STUDY:

QUANTA SERVICES

POWERING THE WORLD

Quanta Services is building infrastructure for a brighter future. The group works in multiple sectors, including electric power, oil and gas pipeline, renewables, specialties (helicopter operations, micropile foundations, pigging, and LiDAR), engineering, and communications — delivering construction, deployment, and ongoing maintenance services.

In an industry where variations in the natural and built environments can significantly impact the difficulty and duration of projects, it’s vital to have consistent, robust and accurate methods for estimating. However, Quanta’s rapid expansion into the international market — both organic and through corporate acquisitions — strained the company’s estimating processes.

“As we grew internationally and worked with a broader set of people and businesses, validating estimates was beginning to overwhelm our team,” says Jody Greer, Director of Estimating and Project Controls at Quanta Energized Services. “We were spending more time checking Excel formulas for errors, as well as validating the logic behind those formulas, which gave us less time to look at the bigger picture.”

In addition to the workload burden on the central team, the volume of multiple homegrown spreadsheets and possibility of errors raised the risk of making costly misjudgments about the economic viability of major projects. To manage increased business volumes while simultaneously improving accuracy, Quanta Energized Services business wanted to introduce a dedicated estimating tool that would be used consistently across all its units.
